A mummy uncovered at the ancient site of Cusco in Peru has surprised scientists with what was contained in its gut.

This advanced device “comes from the consciousness of an indigenous society with no written language,” said anthropologist Ramiro Matos.

The advanced craftsmanship of the ancient Puma Punku site defies explanation. Remaining stone blocks bear no chisel marks and many interlock with very fine precision.

When describing the discovery of an ancient love letter placed upon the body of a loved one, Chris Scarre, head of the archaeology department at the University of Durham, said: “Archaeologists who investigate tombs are often moved to wonder about the character of the deceased, the thoughts of the mourners and their hopes and fears on the passing of a person dear to them.”

A team of archaeologists have discovered twenty-five well preserved quipus, an ancient form of record-keeping used by the Inca, in the archaeological complex of Incahuasi in Peru. The finding is rare and significant because the quipus were found in ancient warehouses rather than in burials, as most discoveries in the past.
