For the past month Chinese authorities have been attempting to deal with massive green algae blooms off the coast of Qingdao, considered a prime tourist destination.
Green algae is generally not poisonous to people but it can clog up waterways and kill off other marine life by using up oxygen in the sea. Mass blooms are generally caused by high levels of nitrates from industrial and farming runoff.
According to the regime mouthpiece Xinhua, the bloom has spread to around 12,000 square kilometers in waters off of China’s coastline overall. Algae first started blooming in the Yellow Sea four years ago.
Apparently, many beach-goers aren’t deterred by mass blooms, as shown in the photos below.
