Thursday Travel to Design: Paper Lanterns

Originating in China and Japan, paper lanterns are often associated with celebration. They are usually made out of thin, brightly colored paper and bamboo or a collapsable metal frame, with a bulb or a candle placed inside, resulting in a beautiful glow!

During the Chinese New Year, thousands of paper lanterns are lit to welcome good luck in the new year. These are usually red, but paper lanterns can be found in many colors, shapes and sizes.

Paper lanterns are extremely versatile and are a great addition to any home! Plain white, round lanterns are a great neutral accessory. Try adding just one, or you can even add them in clusters for added drama.

Or, for a great pop of color, consider adding paper lanterns in bright hues! They'll really pop against a brightly colored wall as well.

Another option is to spring for paper lantern-inspired accessories. We love this table lamp that incorporates two small paper lanterns!
