Staging a home can help it to sell more quickly –but what happens when staging goes wrong?
Last week we looked at The 5 Most Common Home Staging Mistakes and saw some common mistakes that sellers often make when selling their homes. Today, let’s run through five more home staging mistakes. See how you can avoid them and make your home market-ready.
1. Staging With Worn Out Furniture
Staging your home with old, worn out furnishings –no matter how ‘comfy’ they might be, is always a bad idea. Well-used furniture can turn a potential buyer away quickly. Instead, consider staging with a few high-quality pieces –you can take them with you when the home sells.
2. Leaving Signs of an Animal
Pets are lovely –but your potential buyers don’t want to see the less-than-attractive signs of them. Pet hair, smells, and stains will make prospective buyers run the other direction. If you have animals in your home, consider moving them to a different location while you are trying to sell your home. Then thoroughly clean!
3. Neglecting Small Spaces
Neglecting the small spaces and only focusing on the main areas is another bold and dangerous move. If you can’t completely declutter every nook and cranny, then consider investing in some cute baskets or storage containers to hold small items, and buy you some time while you declutter.
4. Keeping the Bright, Bold Colors
You might love the bold, red wall –but your potential home buyers may be less excited about it. Keeping things neutral and low key makes the home more appealing to a wide range of tastes. With a neutral color pallet for the backdrop, buyers will be better able to envision themselves living there.
5. Not Making the Most of Natural Light
Finally, don’t underestimate the power of natural light. Natural light can instantly and dramatically improve the look of an indoor space, and when staging, you want to make sure you take full advantage of any available natural light. Remove dark or heavy curtains when showing; and never obscure windows with cabinets or large furniture.
In today’s competitive market, home staging can give your home the boost that it needs to stand out from the crowd, helping it to generate more interest and sell faster. When staging, avoid these mistakes and try to think with the house hunters in mind –looking out for ways to make your home appealing to potential buyers.
