Ron Svenden of Brewster, Massachusetts had emphysema and was coughing a lot when he went to the hospital, where he was further diagnosed with dehydration and pneumonia, according to media reports.

His x-rays showed his left lung had collapsed and had a dark spot, suggesting he has lung cancer. But when the doctors operated on him, the dark spot turned out to be a pea sprout, reported the Associated Press. Doctors said that the pea is what created a situation conducive to pneumonia.

“A couple days in a dark, wet environment, I'd sprout too,” Dr. Jeff Spillane of Cape Cod Hospital, told AP.

The doctors removed the sprout and drained fluid surrounding it. A month after the surgery, Svenden is now recovering.
