Creating a comfortable sitting area isn’t difficult. In fact, you may be surprised to find that you probably already have quite a few spaces in your home that would transition nicely into sitting areas.
Here’s how you can design an inviting and comfortable sitting area in your home.
Find a Spot
The first step in creating a sitting area is to find an ideal place for it. There are plenty of good spots where you can chisel out your own personal sitting area. Some ideal options could include:
- In Front of a Window
While a window of any size is an ideal location for a sitting area, full, wide windows are especially ideal places to make a sitting area. These are great places to curl up with a good book and take advantage of the view.
- Cozy Corner
Another great place for a sitting area is a corner space. Turn a disused corner of the house into a sitting area where you and possibly a few others can relax, without being disrupted as easily.
- The Bedroom
Adding a bedroom sitting area is a great way to enhance your personal space. Allowing you to take the time to unwind before bed or spend a few minutes preparing yourself for the day in the morning.
Add the Furniture
Once you have your space picked out, you can choose the furniture. Try to choose pieces that are to scale with the size of your area. If you have a tiny corner, look for one, or two chairs that are relatively small. For bigger areas, you may even be able to fit in larger sofas and armchairs.
Add the Details
Finally, add in some décor that will finish off the sitting area. A side table, a throw, some pillows, or maybe even a shelf and a favorite piece of artwork can all help to enhance your sitting area and make it more personal. Don’t forget about a lamp or wall sconces, important for adding task lighting to your area.
A rug can also help to define the space as a separate area. When it comes to adding sitting areas to your home, there’s no limit on where you can, or can’t put one. The best rule of thumb is to avoid high traffic areas, and to look to carve out your space next to a feature like a fireplace or window.
