A chain of earthquakes struck the Southern part of Qinghai Province early Wednesday in China, the official website for the United States Geological Survey earthquake.usgs.gov has confirmed. Hundreds are reported dead.
The first quake was a jolting 6.9 on the Richter Scale, and was followed quickly by a 5.3, and two hours later by a 5.8.
BBC News has confirmed that there are at least 400 people dead and 10,000 injured. Due to the pervasive Chinese communist regime information censorship, the exact numbers remain unclear (for detailed information on this censorship, see The Epoch Times article on Xinhua).
The closest town to the mountainous area is Yushu, close to the Tibetan border.
BBC Correspondent Michael Bristow has spoken to witnesses on the scene and gave some fresh information about the victims and soldiers who providing assistance to those who are in need of rescue.
“We have spoken to an official in the main town which has been hit that’s a town called Jiegu, and he said that about 80 percent of the houses in that town had fallen down and people were trapped underneath the rubble. There are about 700 soldiers already stationed in that county so they were on the scene rather quickly,” said Bristow on the BBC News Website.
