A 13-year-old boy has been apprehended by members of the public after he brutally stabbed a supermarket worker in her 60s.

Detectives have charged the teenager with attempted murder following the incident in the Ipswich suburb of Yamanto, west of Brisbane.

Police allege that at 5.22 p.m. on Jan. 13, the boy approached the woman in the Queensland shopping complex near Warwick Road before stabbing the 63-year-old in the back with a knife.

First aid was rendered to the woman by attending police crews before she was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital, where it is understood she remains in a critical condition.

The 13-year-old was taken into custody, and has been charged with attempted murder.

He is due to appear before Ipswich Children’s Court on Jan. 14.

Under the state’s new Making Queensland Safer laws, young offenders face harsher sentences in line with adult offenders for 10 offences including causing grievous bodily harm and other malicious acts.

The minimum non-parole period is 15 years.

Yamanto is located within the same council area as Redbank Plains where 70-year-old grandmother, Vyleen Joan White, was killed after being stabbed in the chest during a carjacking by four youths.
