The Chinese regime has denounced comments by an Australian politician who drew a comparison between the West’s response to China’s rise and France’s failure to contain the advance of Nazi Germany.

Andrew Hastie, a federal lawmaker of the country’s ruling Liberal party, in an Aug. 8 opinion piece for Nine newspapers, urged Australians to be “clear-eyed” on the threats posed by the communist regime, as it seeks to replace the United States as the dominant power in the Indo-Pacific.
