Two more charges have been levelled against veteran high-profile broadcaster Alan Jones with an alleged ninth victim coming forward, police say.
On Nov. 18, the broadcaster and former rugby coach was charged with 24 offences against eight people, including indecent and common assault.
The newest charges come after New South Wales (NSW) Police received fresh legal advice.
Jones has faced pressure over allegations he indecently assaulted several young men and boys during his decades-long career.
The allegations were first published by The Sydney Morning Herald in December 2023, which was later revealed to have sparked an investigation by NSW Police.
The Epoch Times is unable to independently verify the allegations in the newspaper report.
The Initial Charges
NSW Police laid the charges after investigating offences spanning two decades.“In March 2024, State Crime Command’s Child Abuse Squad established Strike Force Bonnefin to investigate a number of alleged indecent assaults and sexual touching incidents between 2001 and 2019,” the statement said.
“Following extensive inquiries, about 7.45 a.m. yesterday (Nov. 18), strike force detectives executed a search warrant at a unit in Circular Quay where they arrested an 83-year-old man.
“The man was taken to Day Street Police Station, where he was charged with a total of 24 offences against eight victims, including 11 counts of aggravated indecent assault—victim under authority of offender, nine counts of assault with act of indecency, two counts of sexually touch another person without consent and two counts of common assault.”
Police Continue to Investigate
New South Wales Police Assistant Commissioner Michael Fitzgerald said the work of the task force wasn’t over.“We believe that we will have more people coming forward with information,” he told reporters.
A Storied Career
The former 2GB radio broadcaster kicked off his successful career in 1985 and became a hard-hitting interviewer with access to high-profile political guests from across the spectrum.He worked with Sydney radio station 2UE before joining rival 2GB, where he maintained the biggest market share for decades.
He later presented for Sky News Australia before joining digital platform ADH TV. He has been off-air since November 2023, but has continued to speak at private events.
Jones espoused strong conservative views—attending the Conservative Political Action Conference in Australia—and was also critical of the climate change movement and COVID-19 lockdowns—a position that saw him at odds with his colleagues.
His off-the-cuff commentary did sometimes spark controversy.
In 2019 while working for 2GB radio, he called on then-Prime Minister Scott Morrison to “shove a sock down the throat” of former New Zealand leader Jacinda Ardern regarding her comments on climate change.
Jones was found to have breached media rules by the Australian Communications and Media Authority.
He later wrote an apology letter to Ardern saying he “did not intend to suggest any violence towards you.”
Jones coached the national men’s rugby union team between 1984 and 1988, and worked as a school teacher and school cricket coach.
