Tom Bosley, the laid back and mild-mannered father on the 1970s sitcom Happy Days, died on Tuesday at his home in Palm Springs, California, according to People magazine. He was 83.

His death was caused by a staph infection, according to TMZ.

Bosley played Mr. Cunningham on Happy Days from 1974 to 1984.

Before appearing on television, he appeared in musicals and in plays, grabbing a Tony Award in 1959 for his role as New York City Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia in the musical Fiorello!

After he left Happy Days, Bosley starred alongside Angela Lansbury in the CBS series Murder, She Wrote.

Henry Winkler, Bosley’s Happy Days co-star, released a statement on behalf of the cast that expressed the group’s sentiments over Bosley’s death.

“Since day one of ‘Happy Days,’ we as a cast have remained so wonderfully connected. He was our TV dad and a real life father-figure for the past 33 years,” Henry Winkler stated to Access Hollywood. “He will be sorely missed. And our most positive thoughts go out to the family.”
