MISSISSAUGA, Canada—Shen Yun Performing Arts delighted the Waring and Batch family Friday night at the Living Arts Centre.

Linda Batch came with her daughter, Karen, brother Ken Waring, and his wife Linda Waring.

Ms. Batch, an accounting professor at Sheraton College, spoke of her opinions so far during the midway intermission.

“It is lovely, I think it is fantastic. It’s very colourful and artistic, very energetic—it is wonderful. We are really enjoying it,” said Ms. Batch

“I love the dancing. My daughter is a synchronized swimmer, so we love the creativity, costumes, and the artistry,” she said.

Karen, her daughter, was on the high school synchronized swimming team that won Ontario’s provincial championship. Despite the sport’s name, she performs solos in addition to duets.

Mrs. Batch said as they watched the performance they were thinking how it could inspire Karen’s swim routines, which she said are “basically dancing in the water.”

Karen was enjoying the opportunity to learn about China’s traditions.

“It is very interesting to learn about different cultures this way, because I don’t know much about the Chinese culture. So this is really cool,” she said.

Ms. Batch said it would be wonderful if her students, many of whom are ethnic Chinese, could have the opportunity to see Shen Yun.

“It is really lovely and I am glad [Shen Yun] brought [Chinese culture] to Canada.”

New York-based Shen Yun was founded on a mission to revive 5,000 years of divinely inspired Chinese culture, a heritage largely lost in China proper after 60 years of communist rule, particularly the decade-long Cultural Revolution.

Mr. Waring, the vice president of information systems at a healthcare company, was impressed by the capability of Shen Yun’s dancers.

“I think they are incredible athletes, I mean these are world-class and very committed. They must have spent their whole lives at this. To represent culture and dance and bring that to the stage is fantastic. It is a great show for everybody,” he said.
