WOKING, United Kingdom—The New Victoria Theatre was filled with expectations as the audience awaited the Feb. 4 performance of Shen Yun Performing Arts. Paul and Rebecca Knight were amazed at the entire production.

Mrs. Knight, a therapist, said, “Absolutely incredible! I’m just overwhelmed. It’s just amazing! Absolutely amazing! They’re incredible dancers, aren’t they?”

The couple both enjoyed the dance of flowing water sleeves. “Absolutely amazing, and it’s just so bright. It takes you to lots of places in your mind,” Mrs. Knight said.

“It’s flowing. The colors are flowing. It’s just very eloquent, just the way it flows through,” Mr. Knight said.

Shen Yun’s patented animated backdrop plays an important supporting role in storytelling, which the Knights thought was “brilliant.”

“Oh my goodness, it’s impeccable isn’t it? Impeccable,” Mrs. Knight added. “I don’t know how they do it, it was amazing. It was almost like magic,” she said of the dancer’s characters jumping in and out of the screen.

“There was one dancer, where he did a cartwheel in and he cartwheeled out. You couldn’t have got any better,” Mr. Knight said.

A Wonderful Orchestra

Each performance by Shen Yun is accompanied by a live orchestra. Both Eastern and Western instruments are featured throughout the program.

The Knights were near the stage and enjoyed a close-up of the orchestra. “We are right at the front, so we can see all of the musicians. It’s incredible,” Mrs. Knight said.

“The conductor is incredible, isn’t she?” Mrs. Knight said. “You notice her eyes are on the stage. She’s seeing as well as being present with the instruments, and all the other musicians. She’s got an overview of everything. And her body, she’s just everywhere. She did not stop.”

The opening scene showcased heavenly “clouds” from the realm of the divine beings. Having front-row seats brought the couple into the heavens with the dancers. “We were like in the clouds with the smoke,” Mrs. Knight said.

“It’s so good. We’re so lucky to have the seat where we are because we’re literally at the front so we can see everything. Every musician, everything in that, all the colors. It’s so good. Yes, all incredible!”

The Chinese instruments had a unique sound that pleased Mr. Knight. “Even some of the instruments ... I look at it and the tune is just amazing coming from it. Sometimes, I’m literally just down looking in there at the players,” he said.

A firefighter, Mr. Knight was moved by the powerful dances depicting a modern China where faith in the divine is persecuted and suppressed.

“Very powerful, moving, especially when talking about the culture when he got taken to prison,” Mr. Knight said of one performance about a prisoner of conscience in China.

Mrs. Knight said, “You know, I literally was grabbing his arm ... I was grabbing [him] because it was so emotional.”

Shen Yun’s mission is to restore the goodness and glory of China’s 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture and share with the world the beauty of “China before communism.” Shen Yun is banned by the ruling communist regime from performing in China.

“I feel sad that they can’t actually perform in China,” Mrs. Knight said. “I feel sad for them.

“We’ve learned today. I didn’t know some of that,” she said. “I will be telling my son when I go back home today and hope that he passes that on. I feel quite sad that they’re not allowed.”

Shen Yun’s hosts give a short explanation of the various dances and this was appreciated by the Knights. “I think it’s really important, the two people telling the story after every dance,” Mr. Knight said.

“That’s important, isn’t it, that we are able to have a message in that as well,” Mrs. Knight said.

Mrs. Knight explained how they came to see Shen Yun. “I had a look online, actually. I’ve always wanted to watch this particular dance but I didn’t know if it would be quite near us. We took time off work today to come here. We live in Kent, so it’s nearly two hours to drive here but it’s so worth it!

“It was great, ... I definitely would come again. Definitely,” she said.
