SAN FRANCISCO—On the evening of Jan. 2, Joel Caravantes, a car dealership manager, and his wife Aileen enjoyed Shen Yun Performing Arts for the first time at the War Memorial Opera House.

During intermission, Mr. Caravantes couldn’t stop praising the show. He thought it was “good, awesome, and amazing—the performance was very top-notch.”

“I like how the music is connected with the performance. Every detail was on point. It’s very nice, very soothing,” he expressed.

Mr. Caravantes described watching Shen Yun as “opening a present on Christmas.” The show kept him “waiting for something unexpected.”

Shen Yun Performing Arts is the world’s top classical Chinese dance and music company. Presenting a brand-new set of programs each year, the company has been delighting audiences around the world since 2006.

For 5,000 years, China’s civilization flourished under the shared belief that the divine will bless those who uphold traditional moral values. Tragically, within just a few decades of the communist party’s violent takeover, these beliefs were erased and replaced with atheism.

The mission of Shen Yun artists is to return to the world’s stage—the glory and beauty of China’s 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture.

Mrs. Caravantes, too, loved the live music because “it really immerses you.”

It’s like, “You’re on stage with the performers—you’re there witnessing what they’re performing. It’s been amazing so far,” she exclaimed.

Reflecting on Shen Yun’s spiritual element, Mrs. Caravantes said it “gives you hope that there’s something more beautiful out there—[comparing to] where we live here.”

As Christians, the couple was moved by the traditional values that Shen Yun portrayed. Though Chinese culture is different from what they’re familiar with, the performance brought them closer to God.

“The story connects you. It’s the same storyline of [the Creator] coming back to earth for his people,” Mr. Caravantes stated.

People “need to definitely check [Shen Yun] out. It’s something that you don’t see on a daily basis. It’s something you can’t watch on TV or just around the corner—It’s a very unique performance.”

Also in the audience were Ward Steward and Nelina Castillo. They both work at the Solano County education office.

They, too, thought the performance was amazing.

“I appreciate cultural performances that have significance and symbolism, and that’s what I saw this evening. It was lovely,” Mr. Stewart said.

He particularly enjoyed Shen Yun’s traditional stories and the connection between humans and the divine. “It’s a very well-depicted show,” he added.

Ms. Castillo was mesmerized by every part of the performance.

“The traditional styles of dance, the intricate costumes—it was just beautiful, the whole thing. The live orchestra—each piece had its own unique feel to it. [The show] was just executed really well.”

Referring to the artists’ mission to bring back traditional Chinese culture that was destroyed by decades of communist rule, Mr. Stewart said he hoped that the culture is not lost because “all forms of cultural performance and symbolism and retaining of culture is very important.”
