NEW YORK—New York-based Indian actor and classical music vocalist Jyoti Singh found compassion and love in Shen Yun Performing Arts’ performance of classical Chinese dance and music at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater on Jan. 10.

Ms. Singh is known for her roles in “9 Eleven” (2011), “Life! Camera Action...” (2012) and “Dude! Where Is My Dream Girl?” (2012). She is the younger sister of Bollywood actor Chandrachur Singh, according to IMDb.

She said that she saw some people crying, and said it was very touching, and there was a feeling of wanting to know more about what is happening in China, where the peaceful meditation practice of Falun Dafa is suppressed in the modern day.

“For thousands of years, Buddhist, Taoist, and other disciplines were at the heart of society,” Shen Yun states on its company website. “The New York-based Shen Yun’s mission is to revive the true, divinely inspired culture of China and share it with the world.”

No matter how far a culture progresses, people will always come back to simplicity and “our roots,” said Ms. Singh. “[W]e all will be not so happy from within, that we'll have to find the same methods to go back and realize where we come from.”

She continued to explain that the qualities of love and compassion, which are rooted in ancient culture, are being replaced by technology and other concerns. “These things are taking over more of our mind than actual simplicity and humanity overall. We’re losing humanity overall,” she said.

“We’re trying to move forward with the world, but not being happy internally. I think that inner peace only comes from things like [Shen Yun],” she said.
