Excitement is building again in Frankfurt, a global hub of business, finance, culture, and education, for the all-new 2025 season of Shen Yun Performing Arts. Shen Yun will perform at Jahrhunderthalle Frankfurt from Feb. 5 to Feb. 9.
Some, who now have professional careers in business or science and who may have had musical training when young, talked about their appreciation of Shen Yun’s orchestra and singers.
Among them were Björn Peters and his wife, Britta Jacobus, who watched Shen Shun at Jahrhunderthalle on May 31, 2022.
“You notice with the musicians that they all have very, very high levels of individual artistry, and the conductor also brings it together wonderfully,” said Mr. Peters, a physicist and entrepreneur who also once studied singing.
Shen Yun is based in New York, and its live orchestra boasts a unique blend of a classical Western orchestra with traditional Chinese instruments like the erhu and pipa.
“I also thought it was wonderful that individual Chinese instruments were added to the ensemble so that overall you get a European harmony, but with Chinese instruments—and that’s how culture is created! By mixing different influences,” he said.
Mr. Peters’ wife, Ms. Jacobus, a freelance opera singer, shared that Shen Yun’s baritone “was very good, he has a well-directed voice, a great range, good depth, it was all there.”
Many business people who watched the performance said they came out of their hectic work routine into the world of Shen Yun and saw the glorious culture of divine heritage and precious traditional values, making for a relaxing and uplifting experience.
Norbert Wulff and his wife, Barbara, also found the performance they watched on Jan. 11, 2023, to be very impressive. Mr. Wulff is a lawyer and worked for many years in the financial industry.
She Yun’s mission is to revive traditional Chinese culture before communism. Some in the audience could see the decline of China caused by the Chinese Communist Party. Shen Yun is banned in China.
The Wulff couple has been following China’s development “very intensively” over the past 30 years, the lawyer said.
“I had been to Beijing and Shenzhen on business in 1995,” Mr. Wulff said. “At that time, I had been very interested in how this old trading nation, which had suffered greatly under communism, was reviving under the innovations that were introduced at that time,” he said.
“Then, the Chinese economy was flourishing, and it’s painful to see how that’s all being curbed by the current Communist Party and how everything is falling back into the old ways.”
Mrs. Wulff expressed her interest in traditional Chinese culture. She saw the beauty of traditional Chinese culture in Shen Yun but, unfortunately, noted it is not possible to see it in China today.
“If I understand it correctly, Chinese tradition is very divine and spiritual. It is essential to continue to cultivate that so that these values are not lost,” she said.
Bettina Wiesmann, a former member of the Hessian parliament, watched a Shen Yun performance on Jan. 11, 2023. She said it was “a pleasure” to learn about Chinese culture, which has a “spiritual dimension.”
Ms. Wiesmann said the performance was unforgettable, and she praised the skill of the Shen Yun artists.
The music also fascinated her. “What was also excellent, of course, was the accompaniment of the live orchestra playing music that matched the dance, and that also impressed me very much,” she said.
Torsten Mierdorf, who, as a fan of Asia, was happy “to be able to see the old traditions and all these Chinese gods again.”
A martial arts instructor and a district manager for a company, Mr. Mierdorf said the performance also brought attention to abuses in China.
“We know, of course, that it’s not easy to change something there, but through such a performance, you can already contribute to changing something in the world. I thought that was very nice,” he said.
Gunter Weiss, the CEO of a century-old family business, was accompanied by his wife, Ute Weiss, to see Shen Yun also on Jan. 11, 2023.
“Wonderful, flawless!” Mr. Weiss said.
“The music and dancing were fantastic and very well put together. And I thought it was very brave that some of the positions were against the Chinese Communist Party. I’ve never seen anything like that,” he said.
