RIVERSIDE, Calif.—Valerie Valdez creates art from leather and wood. Seeing Shen Yun Performing Arts was a wonderful experience for her as she shared her belief that there is a higher power behind the performance.

I think definitely there’s a message there that in all of that work and all of that dedication, there’s a divine artist behind the masterpiece that was performed today. I think it brings people toward a higher good, a higher perfection that we’re all called to. And you can see that in the perfection of the performance,” said Ms. Valdez, an artist.

Shen Yun is based in New York, and its mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization.
“I think it’s a wonderful mission. I think they should persevere and be faithful to it and continue to spread the message of Falun Dafa. There’s a lot of truth in it,” Ms. Valdez said.
Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.
“I very much enjoyed the dances. I love the choreography. I love the acrobat side of it, which comes from the Chinese culture, as they had mentioned. I love the harmony, and there is definitely a unity in the performers. That’s very difficult to do. You could see how they all worked together,” Ms. Valdez observed.
Shen Yun’s live orchestra is a unique combination of traditional Chinese instruments and a classic Western ensemble.
“I love the music. I love the mixture of the Oriental and the Western music together. That was really beautiful,” Ms. Valdez said.
Shen Yun’s singers are trained in bel canto technique, and the digital backdrop provides a translation of the Chinese text being sung.
I especially liked the operatic song and the meaning behind it. When she said, “You know, atheism is our greatest enemy”. It really is,” Ms. Valdez shared.

Even though Shen Yun presented traditional Chinese beliefs, Ms. Valdez saw many similarities in Shen Yun with her Catholic faith.

“My belief is Catholic. But you can see the fullness of the truth that we’re all called to a divine perfection. We’re all called to our divine creator. And to a higher good. And that’s what we were created for. So, expressing that in artistic form is a beautiful gift. And a beautiful message,” she said.

Ms. Valdez also shared that a performance like Shen Yun is beneficial to everyone who sees it because it shows the potential that humanity has.

“I would recommend this show to others. I think it’s a beautiful message. A beautiful performance of artistic perfection and discipline. I think that’s important to our world today. Where we do a lot of things haphazardly or incomplete. ... These artists show that we can put the fullness of our potential into our work and bring out the greatest beauty. So, it’s a wonderful gift to the world,” she said.
