SAN ANTONIO—After attending Shen Yun’s evening performance on Feb. 4, at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, retired marine Paul Zohlen thought it was “absolutely phenomenal.” Patty, his wife of 57 years, couldn’t agree more.

Based in New York, Shen Yun dancers are highly trained in classical Chinese dance. Dating back thousands of years, it is one of the world’s most athletic and expressive art forms.

“It’s absolutely beautiful. I’m just so impressed with the athleticism, the beauty, and the grace of the dances. It was amazing,” Mrs. Zohlen exclaimed.

Though it was her first time seeing Shen Yun, Mrs. Zohlen said confidently, “I will see it again.”

Shen Yun Performing Arts was established in 2006 by artists seeking to revive China’s divinely inspired civilization. Its 5,000 years of culture and traditions were lost and destroyed by decades of communist rule.
Mr. Zohlen was also intrigued by how well the performers conveyed their messages and stories on stage. He thought Shen Yun’s patented 3-D backdrop definitely helped.

“The way the dancers were able to transition from a character to the 3-D background—I think that was very effective. It was seamless and very, very well done,” he said.

According to its website, Shen Yun’s innovative 3-D projection brings the audience instantly into the story “by extending the stage to infinite realms.” With flawless cooperation between projection and performers, this technology allows for “storytelling without limits.”

More than anything, however, the couple was inspired by the spiritual aspects of Shen Yun.

Prior to the Chinese Communist Party’s spread of atheism, spirituality and the belief in the divine were essential parts of Chinese life. Even today, Shen Yun artists meditate together daily and strive to live by the principles of truth, compassion, and tolerance.

“I think the message to return to traditional moral values is very, very current with the situation [right now]. It’s a very positive and uplifting message for us,” Mr. Zohlen said.

Mrs. Zohlen said she, too, thought Shen Yun’s greatest message is that of hope.

“[I felt] encouraged by the spiritual meaningfulness of our lives. [That’s] what we need to be focusing on. I was really inspired. It was beautiful.”
