Shawne Merriman, the former San Diego Chargers linebacker, was claimed by the Buffalo Bills via waivers on Wednesday, according to ESPN.
The report said that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Miami Dolphins both wanted to claim Merriman.
Buffalo acquired Merriman in an attempt to fill gaps in their defense, which ranks worst in the NFL in points per game and fourth-worst in yardage allowed.
San Diego waived Merriman after he passed an exit physical on Tuesday, NFL Network reported.
He now has five days to show up for practice or he’ll be put on the reserve list, but Merriman is not expected to play in Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears.
In his first three seasons in the league, Merriman had a league-leading 39 1/2 sacks, which helped him earn the nickname “Lights Out.”
