A multistage plan is set to expand Providence’s medical facilities in south Orange County, California, officials announced last week.

Providence—a nonprofit, Catholic health care system operating dozens of hospitals in seven states—will fund the $712 million of projects to “meet the ongoing development and ever-growing demand for high-quality health care in [the region],” according to a Sept. 19 statement.

The projects include a patient care tower for Providence Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, which will add around 100 beds and private patient rooms, and two new specialty health centers in Rancho Mission Viejo and San Clemente.

The funding will come from Providence’s capital funds, as well as some local philanthropists, according to the health care system’s Chief Executive Seth Teigen.

The new patient care tower is scheduled to open in 2028, with updated operating suites and cardiac labs to improve the neuroscience center, cardiovascular programs, and maternity services.

The San Clemente and Rancho Mission Viejo health centers are expected to open in the next few years, each with a full-service imaging center and a multi-purpose clinic with primary, urgent, and specialty care providers, such as OB/GYNs.

The Rancho Mission Viejo center will be bigger since Providence has considered its growing community.

Operating for 50 years, the Providence Mission Hospital is the only trauma center in south Orange County accredited by the American College of Surgeons.

Providence began in 1856 with members of the Catholic church establishing hospitals, schools, and orphanages across the Northwest.

“As we walk in the footsteps of our founding Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange and Sisters of Providence, the legacy of Mission Hospital is rich and our future is very bright,” Teigen said in the statement. “We are so grateful to have wonderful community partners who share our commitment to enhance the health and well-being of South Orange County.”
