A store clerk was set on fire while confronting an alleged shoplifter in a convenience store in Northern California Sept. 22, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Department.
The suspect, 38-year-old Kendall Burton, was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility and is being held without bail for charges including assault with a deadly weapon, battery, arson causing bodily injury, robbery, and mayhem.
Deputies responded to a call about a shoplifter at a convenience store on the 4200 block of Appian Way in El Sobrante—about 20 miles northeast of San Francisco—at around 9:04 p.m. Sept. 22, the department’s spokesperson Jimmy Lee told The Epoch Times.
The suspect poured lighter fluid on the store clerk and then lit him on fire after a confrontation between the two, according to Mr. Lee. The victim was taken to a hospital to treat his injuries.
The suspect has been identified as a transient from El Sobrante who had outstanding warrants prior to the convenience store attack, according to Mr. Lee.
According to the page, his wife, Sabeena Parajuli, said they are “overwhelmed by the mental trauma and the pressure of medical procedures,” and are asking for help to cover his medical bills.
