McDonald’s recently released a statement asking customers to stop using “Shrek Forever After” 3-D collectable drinking glasses, with the option of bringing them into a store for a refund. The glasses in question hold 16 ounces and come in four designs: Shrek, Fiona, Puss n’ Boots, and Donkey.

This is a voluntary recall by McDonald’s; the drinking glasses are not if fact deemed toxic by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

McDonald’s addressed the recall officially on their website, alerting “ Shrek Forever After 3-D” collectable drinking-glass owners that a refund will be available as of Wednesday, when refunds can be obtained. Customers who would like a refund can take the glasses back to the McDonald’s location where they purchased the glasses to receive $3 back. The glasses were originally $2 at the time of purchase but due to the nature of the recall McDonald’s felt it was appropriate to give a little extra to make up for the mishap.

McDonald’s received the Shrek drinking glasses from a manufacturer known as ARC International located in Millville, N.J. The “Shrek Forever After 3-D” collectable drinking glasses were sold at McDonald’s locations across the US from May of this year until last week.

At least 12 million glasses were sold in America and all of them are said to contain trace amounts of the metallic element cadmium. Cadmium is used in the production of steel as a corrosion reduction ingredient, and is known to cause health problems following long-term exposure.
