Fishermen in Maine tallied a record lobster harvest in 2010, according to a report from The Associated Press, citing preliminary figures from Maine officials.
The Department of Marine Resources in Maine said that fishermen caught more than 93 million pounds of lobster with a value of $308 million.
In 2009, fishermen caught a then-record amount of 81.2 million pounds of lobster. However, 2010‘s catch was not as profitable as 2005, when the lobster harvest was valued at $317.9 million.
With the record catch, the price for the prized crustacean averaged around $3.31 per pound, a 14 percent increase over the previous year, AP reported.
In New England, the shrimp fishing season was cut short. The Boston Globe reported that the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission will close down the shrimp fishing season on Feb. 28, around seven weeks earlier than normal.
Biologists say that fishermen have exceeded the limit for shrimp they can catch in one season.
