A viral video is making a strong argument for the special bond that exists between twins.
In the video, two adorable newborn twin girls named Sofia and Sara Tobon cuddle up close in their sleep. Judging by the online response from thousands of viewers, the heartwarming seconds-long clip may just be the sweetest thing you see all day.
In the video, which at the time of writing has been viewed on Instagram over 43,000 times, the camera pans in to see twins Sofia and Sara clad in adorable gray onesies. The onesies are adorned with matching pink and yellow flowers.
One twin lies on her back, eyes fluttering, dozing peacefully. The other twin, lying on her side, is snuggled up so close that she has her arm wrapped around her sister’s chest. Her head is leaning on her sister’s shoulder.
Both baby girls smile and mumble away in their sleep as they hold each other close. The video has garnered comments such as, “Why grow up so fast? So angelic,” and, “You’re lying if you say this isn’t the cutest thing ever!”
“We loved you before we knew you, even when there was just hope for you,” the twins’ parents wrote beside a photo of the family of four in the delivery room. “Happy Birthday mis Amores.”
Sofia and Sara are now toddlers, and with their help of their parents, they are starting to express themselves through bold colors and sweet, matching accessories.
The twins’ parents, Juan Carlos and Juliana Tobon, both real estate professionals, love to travel. So far, they have visited Italy, Spain, and Greece with their little girls, documenting every step of the way on social media.
The Twin Bond
According to the CDC, the birth of twins has increased around 78 percent since the year 1980. As of 2019, there are now around 34 sets of twins born per 1,000 births in the United States.Fraternal twins, on the other hand, are more common. Fraternal twins originating from two separate eggs can be either two boys, two girls, or a boy and girl. Unlike identical twins, they do not share the exact same DNA, hence may not look particularly alike.
Segal is quick to clarify that the twin identity does not threaten the individual identity. The issue that can arise with fraternal twins, however, is that “people, usually outside the family, like to compare and contrast fraternal twins,” Segal explains, “even giving them labels such as the ’smart twin‘ or the ’athletic twin.’”
This comparison could cause the siblings to view their twinship with disdain, she says. But, conversely, divergent interests will help to nurture the twins’ individuality as they grow older.
Celebrity Twins
There are numerous twins in the celebrity realm. There’s the infamous Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, who rose to fame as child actors and eventually branched into fashion design. There’s Scarlett and Hunter Johansson; the former many know as a Hollywood starlet who has performed leading roles in “Avengers” and “Jojo Rabbit.” Hunter, while occasionally pictured on the red carpet with his famous twin, works with charities and Democratic political campaigns.
There’s Kiefer and Rachel Sutherland, the former a Hollywood actor and the latter his twin, a post-production supervisor.
And among others, there’s Vin Diesel and Paul Vincent. The instantly recognizable “Fast & Furious” star has a fraternal twin, Paul Vincent, who works as a film editor.
Colorful photos document the Tobon family’s jet-setting lifestyle; beaches, sunshine, and adventures abound.
