Singer-songwriter Reuben Gray began playing the piano when he was 7. At 10, he started composing songs. He was only 16 years old when he stepped onstage for the Series 11 Britain’s Got Talent audition in 2017.

But during the audition, Reuben didn’t feel right without his father there. The teen’s dad couldn’t make it for his audition as he works overseas for most of the year—or so Reuben thought!

Reuben walked out onstage and introduced himself before the BGT judges. At one point, judge Simon Cowell asked him: “Who’s your biggest supporter?” He replied: “My dad, definitely.”

The teen singer revealed his own dad was his biggest fan, to which Simon queried: “More than your mom?”

Before Reuben could reply, someone from the audience suddenly stood up and shouted: “YES I AM! I’m his biggest fan!”

To Reuben’s greatest shock, it was his dad.

Gobsmacked, Reuben faltered, his jaw dropped, and the audience came alive with delight. Visibly moved, he exclaimed: “I didn’t think he would be here, I thought he was working.”

“Whenever I play anywhere, he will always come,” he added, holding back tears.

Witnessing the touching moment, hosts Ant and Dec remarked: “Aw, he’s surprised him!”

When asked what he was going to sing, Reuben said: “I’m gonna sing my own song called ‘Lifeline.’ I wrote it about a year ago, and it’s about my girlfriend, who I didn’t really treat right, and it’s an apology, really.”

Then he started playing the piano and singing softly what eventually bloomed into a soul-bearing melody. His dad, and self-confessed number one fan, was caught singing along the whole while—he knew every word!

Undeniably, the presence of his father propelled Reuben to put on the best performance. The judges were clearly moved by the teen’s talent.

After the song, everyone was on their feet, including all four judges, but nothing could compare to Dad’s proud reaction.

Judge David Walliams spoke first. “What a talented young man you are! I mean, incredible to write such a beautiful song at your tender age. You sing it so beautifully and it was incredible!” he said.

Simon added: “That was a great audition, Reuben. You could come on, be authentic, be original and take risks. I really like the song. You’ve got talent, you really have.”

“Reuben, I have so much admiration for you. You know, you’re up there, you’re bearing your heart and soul and that makes you really vulnerable. And you’ve shared a piece of your life story with us. I’m sure your dad was proud. Well done!” judge Alesha Dixon said.

After Simon and Amanda Holden added their votes, it was four “yeses” from the judges to Reuben’s delight … then, there was just one more thing left for the moment to be complete; Dad got up onstage to embrace an emotional son, and both went off backstage to celebrate.

Reuben’s number one fan certainly made sure he didn’t miss this one! We are sure he’s super proud of his talented son.
