Country singer Luke Bryan and his wife, Caroline, adopted a dog on Feb. 11, 2019. But not just any dog: “Poochie” was a long-term rescue pup whose carers had all but given up on him ever finding a forever home. Poochie was 18 years old.

The Bryan family home was crowded to begin with. The doting parents live with sons Bo and Tate and their 17-year-old nephew, Til, full-time. They also enjoy playing host to family during the holidays and have a menagerie of animals living on their land. But Luke and Caroline fell in love with Poochie after seeing him featured on Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue’s social media page, and the Bryans easily found room for one more furry family member.
Poochie had been relinquished by his previous owners due to allergies. Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue rejoiced that “God had different plans” for Poochie after hearing that the Bryans wanted to adopt him. They posted adorable pictures of the pup with his new family, captioned: “He is pictured here with his new mom, Caroline and his previous foster, Lacy Marie! He is loving life on the Bryan farm.”

Poochie threw himself into life on the farm, and the family shared numerous photos of Poochie playing, eating, loving life, and being affectionate with the Bryans and their animal-loving kids.

But sadly, Poochie’s “happily ever after” was to be a short chapter in the elderly dog’s life: he passed away just nine days after the Bryans took him home.

“My heart is sad but full to post this,” Caroline posted on Instagram. “Our sweet Prince Poochie has passed away. He lived 18 years and was loved by so many people.”
Sharing the sadness of the whole family, but showing that they love to look on the bright side of life, Caroline continued: “My kids especially loved to hear him snore when he slept.” The loving mom posted a series of cute photos and video footage of the old dog in his happy new home for all to see.

The Bryan family were keen to thank the animal rescue team for their love, support, and limitless hard work, also. Caroline specifically thanked staff for “giving our family the opportunity to love this sweet dog.”

Taking a leaf from the Bryans’ book, this is the perfect opportunity to look on the bright side of life: Poochie was able to spend nine days in the home of his dreams, with a family who loved him and showered him with care and affection. Thousands of rescue dogs are never lucky enough to find their forever home, so while Poochie’s respite was brief, it certainly burned bright!

Our sympathy goes out to the Bryan family. But we commend their loving spirit and positive outlook! Here’s hoping that more senior pups like Poochie are given the chance of a loving home in which to live out their last days in happiness.

“If the kindest souls were rewarded with the longest lives,” Caroline wrote, sagely, “dogs would outlive us all.”
