Tales of homeless and abused dogs being rescued from the streets never fail to touch us. In this story, a lucky stray dog, covered with a dense growth of tangled and unhealthy fur, was given a second chance at life with the help of social media.
When good Samaritans stumbled upon the severely matted stray dog on the side of a road in Oviedo, Florida, they took to Facebook to ask for help. What happened next was incredible!
Kari Falla, owner of BGE Grooming, a salon for pets in Seminole County, immediately responded after seeing the heart-wrenching Facebook plea posted by the rescuers.
“They said they found it on the side of the road and it almost got hit by a car,” Falla told InsideEdition.com in 2017. “They couldn’t keep it for the night and the woman was looking for someone who could.” She added: “I could tell he’d been that way for a few years from the pictures. You could tell it was extreme neglect.”
Falla knew that she had to help this abandoned dog as his severely matted and overgrown fur could pose a danger to his health. “When a dog is matted that badly, it can cause its blood flow to stop as well as bruising to the dog,” she explained.
She wanted to give this poor dog a life-saving transformation even if it meant opening her salon along East Broadway Street at midnight.
When the 4-year-old pooch arrived at the salon, she realized the gravity of the issue. “It was seriously the most disturbing situation I’ve ever seen in my life,” she told The Dodo.
“It made me cry,” she said to InsideEdition.com.
The dog had to be carried to the bathroom as he had difficulty walking with his heavy mass of matted fur. He could hardly see, as the overgrown fur was covering his eyes. His mouth and paws were completely buried with the overgrown coat.
Even though Falla had groomed many other rescued animals, this dog was in a pathetic condition. His flea-infested fur smelled terrible, “like death.”
“He could not walk. He could not poop. His whole body was like a mummified cast,” she said. “He had a very long leash that looked like an outside leash embedded in his skin from the mats.”
Falla worked tirelessly for three hours for this emergency grooming until 3 a.m., spending three hours simply to shave his incredibly tangled coat.
After two flea baths and two soothing hypoallergenic baths, the dog looked completely different and seemed to be relieved.
“He was so thankful and happy we groomed him,” Falla said.
Lucky didn’t struggle throughout the whole process, not even a tiny bit.
“The dog was perfect for me when I was grooming him. It’s like he knew I was helping him,” Falla said. “There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a dog wag its tail in happiness after being groomed.”
After the amazing transformation, the dog was aptly named “Lucky.”
Lucky was subsequently taken to a vet, who diagnosed him as blind and deaf. Despite that, all is well with Lucky.
Kudos to Falla for giving Lucky an incredible transformation! After the rescue, the fortunate dog stayed with a foster family, and eventually he got adopted, starting a new lease of life in his forever home.
