Judy Garland and Liza Minelli, Melanie Griffith and Dakota Johnson, Courtney Love and Frances Bean Cobain. What do they all have in common? They are epic mother-daughter duos from the last few golden decades of Hollywood history! But perhaps the tightest of them all are mother Goldie Hawn and her beautiful daughter Kate Hudson, who have recently welcomed a new addition to the family: Hudson’s baby daughter Rani.
Hawn, already a grandmother and adoring the role, couldn’t be more excited. “Being a grandmother is amazing, I love it,” she gushed, according to Now To Love.
Hawn, 71, and Hudson, 39, have always shared a special bond, much like Hawn did with her own mother, and the bond extends to include all members of the growing family. “Family is so important,” Hawn shared. “It brings incredible joy.”
“Kate and I have the kind of relationship that I had with my mother,” Hawn continued, before going on to describe a yoga retreat she attended with Hudson in which they spent most of their time giggling like schoolgirls. “We both knew we didn’t have to say anything—we would just start laughing,” Hawn recalled, testifying to the closeness between the two women. Perhaps it’s one of the reasons they’ve both managed to remain so sane amongst the madness of the Hollywood milieu; laughter is, indeed, the very best medicine.
Despite their frequent fits of giggles, however, Hawn takes physical and mental health very seriously. “Meditation creates peace and calm and contentment, which I think is extremely important for life,” she said, a perspective that appears to have rubbed off on her perpetually calm, poised daughter, now a proud mom of three. Meditation also keeps Hawn poised and ready for grandparenting duties, whenever they should arise!
“I always remember my mom saying there’s only one thing in life she refused to fail at: raising her children,” Hudson said, in conversation with Closer. It seems that Hudson has taken a leaf out of her conscientious mom’s book and is taking much the same approach to raising her own family. Rani, the newest member of the clan, is reaping the benefits of the family’s close bond.
Hawn visits her grandchildren as often as she can, and often with long-term partner actor Kurt Russell, with whom she has been in a relationship since 1983. “She sees her grandchildren all the time,” confirmed an anonymous family friend. “She gets in the sandbox, blows bubbles, and acts silly.” We’ve all seen Hawn’s Oscar-winning performance in 1969’s Cactus Flower and adore her trademark infectious energy. Somehow, the effervescent grandma’s sandbox antics don’t surprise us!
Thankfully, the loving family regularly posts pictures and updates of family time and the adorable, growing brood on social media. One photo in particular has garnered a huge following: Hawn and partner Russell fawning over an adorable bundle (little Rani, we presume!) in the intimate space of their bedroom at home. “Grandma and Grandpa duty,” Hudson captioned.
Hawn advocates sharing, particularly between mothers and daughters. “If you don’t share things with them in an intimate way, then you’re not a person to them—you’re just a mom,” she once imparted. And plentiful evidence from Hawn’s own life suggests that this is a belief she truly lives by.
“A good family is the answer to happiness,” Hawn shared, sagely. May Hawn’s wisdom pass down to her daughter, little Rani, and generations upon generations of family to come.
They’re lucky to have you, Grandma Goldie!
