Some pet owners are just irresponsible. They dump their pets in a garbage bin like trash, just like what happened to this puppy named Sally. A few years back in 2017, she was discarded by her coldhearted owner in a dumpster. “Thump!” The loud thumping sound alerted a man near the dumpster.

Out of curiosity, the man took a peek inside the dumpster, and a taped, large cardboard box aroused his suspicion. He tore open the box, and what was inside shocked him!

A 35-pound (approx. 16-kilogram), big, bloody puppy was lying inside the cardboard, stained with blood. She was severely injured and was suffering from wounds all over her body. But luckily, she was still alive and constantly wagging her tail, striking the box, seemingly signaling for help.

The man posted a photo of Sally on Twitter and called Dallas city shelter for help. Volunteers from Dallas DogRRR were alerted of Sally’s plight on Twitter and sprang into action immediately. Patti Dawson, executive director and vice president of Dallas DogRRR, was the first to reach out to Sally.

“You open the box and never could you fathom that you find a 4 month old puppy unable to move,” Dallas DogRRR wrote on Facebook. “This is how Sally was found, taped up in a box in a dumpster like yesterday’s trash.”

In spite of being dumped and abandoned, the frail and dehydrated Sally warmed up to Dawson the moment she saw her. Perhaps Sally was elated to be saved. The sweet puppy embraced Dawson tightly with her paws around and kissed her for 15 minutes.

“I’ve been doing rescue now for two-plus years, and I have never been embraced the way she embraced me upon our first meeting,” Dawson told The Dodo. “She is totally the most forgiving, lovable little girl ever. There’s not a mean bone in her body.”

The friendly puppy was emaciated. Sally not only had bleeding wounds but also suffered from serious mange and a high fever. Dawson suspected the blood on the cardboard was from Sally’s injured paws. She may have been struggling to get out of the oven-like box, baking in 90F (32C) heat in the hot summer.

“You can tell she was definitely fighting her way out,” Dawson said. “If you look at where the blood is, it’s really where her paws and legs were.”

“At first, she was just lethargic,” she added. “Once he got her out, she just laid there, but then he got her to drink. I think she drank nine bowls of water—she was so dehydrated.”

Sally was later taken to the vet to be treated for dehydration, mange, skin infection, fever, and respiratory problems. Thirty-six hours later, Sally was bright and well again!

“She is doing very well folks!” Dallas DogRRR updated on Facebook. “Sally is moving to foster care and will be in and out of the vets office for the next several weeks.”

Sally was a positive and happy puppy. She didn’t brood over her miserable past. Like any peppy pup, she wants to be loved and cuddled. And she loves to greet anyone with “one of those hugs that leave you breathless.”

“This is a true testament that no evil will ever burn the light out in her heart,” Dallas DogRRR wrote.

“I really don’t know how you can look at a dog like her and put her in a box,” Dawson told The Dodo. “And when you’re putting that tape on there … I can tell you now, just knowing her personality, she would be looking up at them and trusting her human.”

Sally is absolutely sweet! How could anyone be so cruel to abandon such an adorable puppy? We should be responsible pet owners who treat our pets with love, never abusing them, as they feel pain just as humans do.

Luckily for Sally, she was saved in the nick of time. And the best part was this lovable puppy found a forever home a few months after her rescue! “Today Sally, now named “Callie” is living a life she never knew existed. She is part of a family and loved on each and Every. Day,” Dallas DogRRR updated in a more recent post.

In response, a member of Sally’s forever family, Joyce Donaldson, wrote under the comments section: “We love her and are so happy we were chosen to adopt her! I can’t imagine life without her! Thank you for rescuing her!”

May Sally (Callie) be lavished with an abundance of love forever and never be dumped again.
