Two dogs that spent all their time together for 10 years were separated by the death of one. For the one still living, the grief was torturous, until the owner’s father came up with the perfect solution.
When one of the dogs, a blonde called Rocky, became unwell, Fisher took him to the vet, only to discover he had a huge cancerous tumor within him. Sadly, it was too late for treatment. To end his suffering, Fisher made the difficult decision to have him euthanized.
“Rocky had to get put down that day,” Fisher said. “It was hard to process Rocky’s sudden death, but we can’t imagine how hard it must be for Spencer to have lost his little brother.”
Spencer missed Rocky greatly. He just couldn’t reconcile himself to Rocky’s permanent departure to the great kennel in the sky. “Since Rocky passed, Spencer has been getting up in the night to wander the house looking for his brother,” Fisher said. “And then he starts crying because he can’t find him.”
Fisher placed his ashes close to where the two had always slept, hoping that would help comfort the grieving dog. But it was to no avail, Spencer just couldn’t come to terms with Rocky’s absence.
Then, Fisher’s dad came to the rescue. He ordered a pillow with Rocky’s picture printed on it. They gave it to Spencer, and right away, the pair saw the change in Rocky. “Spencer has been cuddling into the pillow since it arrived, carrying it from the sofa to his own bed,” Fisher said. “He seems a lot more settled now he’s got something to cuddle into.”
The picture of Rocky may not be a perfect substitute, but it certainly is helping provide a measure of comfort to the grieving dog, nestling contentedly against his old friend’s happy face on the pillow. Sometimes it is the little things in life that can make the biggest difference.
Fisher is hopeful that Spencer will get over his loss in time. “I don’t think Spencer will ever get over Rocky’s passing, but I hope he’s able to learn to go on without him,” Fisher said. “We’re hoping Spencer is able to take comfort in his new pillow, and take comfort from all the cuddles he’s getting from his family.”
Dogs feel loss and grieve just as humans do; our furry friends need our support too.
