When two boys were out for a walk, they came across a strange old sign on the ground. Curious, they flipped it over to see what it read, and that’s when they discovered why the sign was there.

Tyler Price and his cousin Eugene were strolling and exploring an abandoned area near their home in Flint, Michigan, when they saw an old sign. After flipping the sign over, they were surprised to find a hole under the sign, but what astonished them more was seeing a pair of eyes staring at them from inside.

It turned out that the sign had been used as a cover for a storm drain. And someone had dumped a pit bull inside and covered it by placing the sign on top. The poor thing was left there to die.

It’s uncertain how long the dog was trapped inside the drain for, but the two boys were startled and determined to rescue it as soon as possible.

“I lifted it up with my foot and looked. All I could see were his eyes,” Tyler told Life With Dogs. He said his first thought was, “We gotta get him out!”

However, trying as hard as they could, they were unable to lift the pooch from out of the drain. So Tyler called his dad, George, for help and even told him to buy some dog food using the boy’s own money. He said: “Dad, take my wallet—can you go to the store and get the dog some dog food and water?”

Tyler’s dad soon arrived and called the Streethearts rescue group to help with the rescue. Tyler then took the dog food his dad brought over and dropped it into the storm drain for the starving pooch—he gobbled it all up straight away.

Before long, the rescue group arrived and hauled the dog out of the drain with a rope. Although the pit bull, now named Mars, had been starved to only half of the weight he was supposed to be, he appeared not afraid or resentful of humans.

“I thought he was gonna be like, angry, or like, try to bite people,” said Tyler. But the puppy was very good-natured toward his human rescuers.

“You can’t get near him without getting kissed!” said Terissa Kerr, who is Mars’s foster owner. “My mind cannot comprehend why someone would want to do something like this—especially to him! He’s amazing … Thank God Tyler came along.”

It’s lucky that the two teens happened to come across the odd sign—thanks to them, Mars is alive. Their prompt response changed everything for this lovely pup.
