For some, the ocean is a big, blue, beautiful playground; for others, it’s a terrifying expanse of unknown territory. But how many people think about whether or not the ocean’s many weird and wonderful residents actually want us frolicking about on their home’s wet, wavy surface? If this video is anything to go by, one seal couldn’t wait to get rid of a bunch of enthusiastic kayakers, and he had a pretty hilarious way of showing it!

Kyle Mulinder was kayaking with friends in New Zealand with a truckload of enthusiasm and high hopes for the day’s sporting accomplishments. Paddling off the coast of Kaikoura on New Zealand’s South Island, the group was being filmed by Mulinder’s friend Taiyo Masuda, and Masuda ended up getting some absolutely priceless footage on his GoPro after Mulinder got caught in the middle of a marine altercation.

The carefree kayaker got hit square in the face with a massive pink octopus, thrown into the air, legs flailing, by an equally massive seal. You couldn’t make this stuff up!

For a moment, the seal and octopus are visible beneath the waves and float alongside the group, but then they both emerge suddenly from the water. The seal has the octopus in his mouth and hurls the beast up into the air, clocking Mulinder square in the face as he does it. “We were just sitting out in the middle of the ocean," Mulinder told Yahoo7 News, “and then this huge male seal appeared with an octopus and he was thrashing him about for ages. He thrashed it in mid fight,” he recalled, “and my face happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Predictably, Mulinder looks pretty shocked in the video after his unexpected full-frontal octo-punch. “It was weird because it happened so fast,” he laughed, “but I could feel all the hard parts of the octopus on my face, like ‘dum dum dum!'”

Amazingly, that wasn’t the end of it. The octopus, probably stunned after being used as a marine baseball bat, stuck itself firmly to Mulinder’s kayak. “There’s an octopus on my boat, there’s an octopus on my boat!” Mulinder shouts gleefully. The group managed to scoop it off gently using one of the kayaker’s oars, and the beast was proclaimed to be alive despite his ordeal. Mulinder recovered, too; Masuda, of course, filmed the whole thing.

Masuda shared his epic video with the world on YouTube and later took to Facebook to share his feelings about the immense trip, saying he was “so overwhelmed” with the now-viral video. “Thank you so much to GoPro for having us in the launch event,” he continued, “and so stoked that we could thank you back with this outcome.” The kayakers are content creators for GoPro and were testing the company’s latest model, Hero7, when they captured this unbelievable moment.

Maybe the next time they hit the waves, this group had better take an ice pack for Mulinder’s face! Either way, we don’t think anybody will be forgetting this awesome trip for quite some time.
