After months of rainy and cold weather, Southern Californians can expect to begin enjoying summer heat starting April 19 through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego counties can expect mostly sunny days with little wind and only some clouds Wednesday and Thursday.

Wednesday will start in the 60s and 70s and by Friday temperatures will be in the 80s and 90s during the day and 50s and 60s at night.

The weather service reported the rise in temperatures is due to what’s known as the East Pacific ridge—a tectonic plate boundary across the floor of the Pacific Ocean—shifting and causing a rise in warm air that will move closer to the West Coast.

For those wanting to escape the heat, the coastline will remain the coolest areas in the 60s and 70s throughout the weekend.

Ocean temperatures will vary in the 50s and 60s, according to Sea Temperature—an international ocean temperature recorder.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association also reported waves will be the highest and strongest in the mornings and evenings, reaching almost 6 feet between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m., and 9 p.m. through 10 p.m. the rest of this week.

Residents wishing to visit Seal Beach, Laguna Beach, and Dana Point should be advised the Orange County Health Agency has reported certain areas of ocean water have bacteria levels that exceed state health standards and may cause sickness.

More information about the specific locations with dangerous bacteria levels can be found on the Orange County Health Agency’s website.
