A parent’s love knows no bounds and is very important for young children. The love and presence of a mother are all the more critical for a young animal’s survival. In a heartwarming picture, a baby koala showing his love and concern for his mother when she needs it most has touched the hearts of many social media users.

When a baby koala and his mother were hit by a car in the west of Brisbane in 2015, they were taken to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital. The mother, named Lizzy, suffered a collapsed lung and facial trauma, while Phantom, the koala joey, remained unharmed the ABC News reported.

However, during the surgery, the then-6-month-old Phantom stayed by his mother’s side and refused to leave, hugging her constantly to show his support.

“Phantom is with Lizzy during her procedures and check-ups to ensure neither mom nor bub gets stressed out,” the hospital said. “Similarly, Phantom is in a ‘pouch’ during weighing to ensure he feels safe and protected while away from mom.”

There was a brief moment when Phantom was separated from his mother, and the hospital made sure he felt safe while away from his mom.

When Australia Zoo uploaded photos of the duo on Facebook, it took the internet by storm. The picture received over 8,000 reactions and some 5,000 shares.

Some users complimented the zoo for their efforts in helping save the mother-baby duo. One user wrote, “Awesome Australia Zoo for rescuing and mending.”

While another commented, “That picture is so sweet. Thank you, Australia Zoo for saving these (2) Koala’s.”

Meanwhile, other users were charmed with the gesture the little joey made, writing, “This is quite possibly one of the cutest and most adorable things I’ve ever seen. It makes me want to visit Australia even more to see all the gorgeous animal life that we don’t have here in the U.S. I'd love to visit the Australia Zoo as well! Such a sweet photo.”

Another user wrote, “Oh so sweet.. I just adore these two.. Baby is clinging to mommy and mommy is fighting for her life.. He has worry in his lil eyes and it breaks my heart and makes me cry.”

According to the hospital’s Facebook page, after the surgery, Lizzy received TLC from the vet team and also from Phantom, who was too young to leave her side. Lizzy was also seen hugging her baby after the surgery.

A few days after the surgery, Australia Zoo updated their readers, stating: “The good news is, Phantom and Lizzy have now made a full recovery and been released back into the wild! Check out this amazing photo of them climbing their way to freedom again, near Ipswich where they were originally found.”

According to Australia Zoo, the duo was among the 58,000 native wildlife patients that the hospital has treated.

Since their release, their status remains unknown. However, their sweet picture is a reminder of the unconditional love between a mother and her child.
