The Seaport Working Group was created by the New York City Economic Development Corporation (EDC) earlier this year. As a member, Save Our Seaport has kept an eye on the proceedings.
In our view, it is becoming obvious that the Seaport Working Group is being steered through a flawed process designed to resemble participatory consensus building. In reality, the NYC EDC is trying to create a belated cover to legitimize what it has always wanted to do: unilaterally assign and privatize all unique and irreplaceable Seaport Historic District public piers, properties, and land for the benefit of the developer, Howard Hughes Corporation.

NEW YORK—Bitter, freezing winds of the season’s coldest day so far whipped through Lower Manhattan Sunday, but it wasn’t enough to keep a crowd of people from visiting the New Amsterdam Market. As temperatures dipped below freezing, several hundred shoppers converged at South Street Seaport to buy freshly baked artisan bread, locally made cheese, New York state apples, and sample a variety of regional ciders.
Imagine Lower Manhattan’s East River waterfront full of schooners and sailboats, low-rise brick buildings, cobblestone streets, and bustling maritime trade. This was New York Harbor in its heyday, but it is now reduced to a single island area called South Street Seaport.
