The ocean is a vast body of mysterious wonders, many that have yet to be discovered. Unlike the mythical Loch Ness Monster, sea dragons, or mermaids, the actual beings discovered are often stranger than fiction.

“The creatures look purely fantastic. They all look like they were just made up ... But, in fact, a lot of them come from what were considered, at the time, scientific sources,” says map historian Chet Van Duzer.
