A day after expressing no regrets for not sounding the sirens during Lahaina’s deadly wildfires, the head of the Maui Emergency Management Agency stepped down.
Maui authorities explain why the island’s extensive system of warning sirens—typically used for tsunamis—was not activated to warn residents of the fire danger in the recent disaster as the death toll climbs.
The death toll from the devastating fires has reached 101, but the final number of those who have perished in the disaster is feared to be much higher.
