BREA, Calif.—After serving the community for 59 years, a family-owned Christmas tree farm is permanently closing its Brea location.

The Peltzer Pines Christmas Tree Farm was founded in 1963 by Charles Peltzer, also known as Chuck. The Peltzer family began farming in Orange County, California, in 1913 when Chuck’s grandfather moved his family from Kansas to Anaheim, starting with 20 acres.
Chuck’s father sold the original 20 acres of farmland to Disney, which remains a part of the entertainment giant’s amusement park today. He used that money to purchase another piece of land in the county for the family to continue farming.

The family continues their presence in the county through their fifth-generation—Chuck’s grandchildren, who often help at their tree farms in Brea and Silverado during holiday seasons.

According to Peltzer Pines’ website, the Brea location is closing due to their landowner deciding to “take a different path” with the land and not renew their lease. However, it is unclear how that path looks as the tree farm did not return a request for comment.

Some concerned residents don’t want to see the beloved tree farm turn into more residential or industrial sites, given that some similar projects have popped up in the city recently.

One example would be the “Brea 265” project, which is in the approval process to convert 265 acres of oil fields into 1,100 homes, according to the project’s website.

When Peltzer Pines announced the news on Facebook, over 35 loyal customers over the years responded with sadness and thankfulness for the farm’s being a part of their lives.

“So so sad,” Jennifer Davis commented on the post. “We used to drive by your farm every day and wave to the growing Christmas trees.”

Kim Danko-Moussette also commented, “Thank you for the many wonderful memories over the past twenty plus years. This news breaks our hearts and [we] wish you all the best in your new adventures.”

For community members who have made Peltzer Pines a part of their Christmas tradition in Brea, they can continue to support the family-owned and operated business at their Silverado location.

Other farming businesses connected to the family are the Peltzer Palm Tree Nursery in Santa Ana and the Peltzer Winery and pumpkin farm in Temecula.
