Jon Stewart has extended his deal to remain the host of “The Daily Show” on Monday nights through December 2025.
Paramount announced on Monday that Stewart, who
returned in early 2024 to host the show through the election cycle, will also continue as executive producer of the satirical news program.
“His ability to cut through the noise and deliver clear-eyed insights is exactly what we need which is why we are thrilled to have him leading ‘The Daily Show’ for another year,” Chris McCarthy, Paramount Global co-CEO and Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios CEO, said in a news release.
“The Daily Show” will continue to split hosting duties throughout the
week with the show’s other comedians, including Michael Kosta, Jordan Klepper, Desi Lydic, and Ronny Chieng.
“The Daily Show” has nurtured a long list of comedians such as Steve Carell, Ed Helms, John Oliver, Aasif Mandvi, Olivia Munn, Larry Wilmore, Samantha Bee, and Roy Wood Jr.
Stewart
hosted “The Daily Show” from 1999 to 2015 before being
succeeded by comedian Trevor Noah, who took over for seven years.
“It’s not like I thought the show wasn’t working any more, or that I didn’t know how to do it. It was more, ‘Yup, it’s working. But I’m not getting the same satisfaction,’” he
told the Guardian newspaper in 2015.
In 2021, Stewart signed a deal with Apple TV+ to
host the series “The Problem With Jon Stewart,” which concluded in 2023.
In an interview with “CBS Mornings” earlier this year, Stewart
said he returned to “The Daily Show” because he needed a platform to “unload thoughts” about the upcoming election.
“I thought I was going to do it over at ... Apple TV+,” he said. “But they decided ... that they didn’t want me to say things that might get me in trouble.”
During his time with “The Daily Show,” Stewart collected a
total of 21 Prime-Time Emmys along with the Kennedy Center’s Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2022. Last month, Stewart received another Emmy in the category of Outstanding Talk Series and
said that the win “made an old man very happy.”
“This is remarkable, to have an opportunity to work with this incredibly talented group, once a week, has really made my Mondays,” Stewart said.
“The Daily Show” airs Mondays through Thursdays at 11 p.m. ET on Comedy Central and streams the next day on Paramount+.
