Chicago police arrested more than 130 Occupy Chicago protesters early Sunday for being in Grant Park after hours, according to reports.
Those who were arrested face misdemeanor charges—including trespassing—and were not released by late morning, reported the Chicago Sun-Times.
“We are going to hold this space, and that’s what we are going to do,” 23-year-old Brit Schulte, an organizer, told the Times. “Our ability to invoke our civil rights to protest shouldn’t be limited, and we shouldn’t be censored.”
Chicago police officer Robert Perez told AFP that “there were no major problems” and “the majority of the protesters that were arrested complied.”
Protesters that refused to leave the park were escorted out by police. However, there was “nothing heavy duty where we had to manhandle them,” Perez added.
In a number of cities around the United States, protesters have come out to demonstrate against what they claim is corporate greed, power, and corruption.
