A recent oil spill in Salt Lake City has been contained due to a joint effort between local officials and Chevron. A statement from the Salt Lake City Emergency Operations Center confirmed that the oil pipeline was shut off Saturday.

Chevron was able to quickly cut off an oil pipeline that started leaking in Red Butte Creek. The oil slowly made its way toward Liberty Park. Liberty Park has been closed to the public until further notice.

Local residents and business owners were contacted by a Wide Area Notification Alert delivered by an automated call box. Precautions have been issued advising citizens to stay away from water at the park and in the creek. Those who feel as though they have become sick due to contact with the oil are advise to call 911 but only if they are experiencing symptoms that include difficulty breathing, dizziness, nausea, and severe headaches.

Chevron has taken evasive action in the oil clean up with teams utilizing filtering booms to remove the oil from the water. The nearby Jordan River is also under scrutiny due to the oil spill and citizens have been advised to avoid contact.

About 100 waterfowl have been taken from the scene to Hogle Zoo’s animal hospital. The birds will be scrubbed gently to remove the oil from their bodies.

The source of the oil spill was a ten inch pipe used to move oil from Colorado to Utah. The pipe carries 15,000 barrels of oil a day.
