The Big Ten logo underwent a change and a 12th team was added to the league on Monday, the athletic conference said in a statement.
“When we announced football division alignments in September, other associated decisions had not yet been made. We wanted to take some time to listen, carefully consider, and make choices that would best honor our history and traditions, reflect our core values and characteristics, and tell our story,” said Big Ten Commissioner James E. Delany in a statement.
The Big Ten also added a 12th school into the league, the University of Nebraska - Lincoln.
“We involved many thoughtful, dedicated professionals and we listened to many ideas from our member schools, alumni and fans,” Delany added.
The new logo—which was decried by several media outlets upon its unveiling—was designed by Michael Bierut and Michael Gericke at the firm Pentagram.
The logo offers more flexibility to be used vertically, horizontally, and in various mediums, the league said.
Also, the Big Ten unveiled their two new divisions, the Legends and the Leaders.
The Legends will consist of Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Northwestern. The Leaders will consist of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, and Wisconsin. The division changes will take place next season.
Both division leaders next year will play in their first championship game on Dec. 3 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
