A Staten Island woman has been charged for allegedly killing and dumping her baby in a trash can outside the condo complex she lived in.
According to the New York Times, police said 28-year-old Nausheen Rahman, was charged with murder on March 13. She was initially charged for concealment of a dead body, but the charges were upgraded after a medical examiner discovered that the newborn was alive before it was left in a garbage bag.
According to an NBC affiliate, officials said Rahman walked into Staten Island University Hospital on March 11 complaining of bleeding. She said she had recently given birth to a baby at her home and had gotten rid of it.
Neighbor Jennifer Goldner, who lives in the same complex as Rahman, said she did not know that she was pregnant. She told local station CBS 2 that she was horrified to hear about the incident.
She also stated that the mother had other options if the baby were alive.
“Drop him off at any firehouse, go to the hospital, do something. A life deserves more than that,” said Goldner.
“So much help we have out there and I guess she didn’t know where to go,” said neighborhood resident Brenda Santiago to PIX11 news.
“If I heard the baby crying, I would have taken the baby to the hospital,” said another local to station ABC 7.
According to local station ABC 7, officials are still trying to find out the baby’s exact cause of death.
