A new video has surfaced of the massive overpass collapse in Kolkata, India that has killed 15 and trapped dozens.
One piece of the overpass, which hangs over the busy Bara Bazaar shopping area, fell on vehicles and people, trapping many.
“We heard a loud rumble and then saw a lot of dust in the sky,” one witness told the New Delhi Television (NDTV).
Another said: “The area was very, very crowded. Motorized rickshaws, taxis ... there was a lot of traffic.”
In the video, viewers can see those underneath the flyover notice its descent but it’s just too late.
Although the video isn’t graphic, television images showed bloody legs of trapped people sticking out from the collapsed concrete.
India faces building collapses often due to their poorly enforced regulations on builders who use substandard building materials.
The overpass was set to finish in 2009, after a contract was signed in 2007 stating it would take two years to complete.
“We completed nearly 70 percent of the construction work without any mishap,” a top official of the infrastructure company building the flyover. “We have to go into details to find out whether the collapse was due to any technical or quality issue.”
