The backlash is believed to be sparked by the 2003 incident known as “The Hood Event.”

Two Turkish nationalists have been detained after a YouTube video surfaced depicting the men trying to place a bag over a U.S. soldier’s head.

Several media outlets have reported that the men, Yalcin Semir Akarsu and Cenk Kizilirmak, were placed under house arrest after the incident, which occurred on April 16 at the Incirlik air base in Adana.

Neither United States or Turkish officials have commented on the incident.

A private news agency in Turkey says Kizilirmak filmed the ordeal; while Akarsu got physical with the soldier.

The video refers to the July 2003 incident where a group of Turkish special forces were arrested by U.S. soldiers and carted away with hoods over their heads for interrogation.

After 60 hours they were released due to protests and the incident become known as “The Hood Event”—many Turks regarded the event as an insult.
