Senator Bernie Sanders played the bit part of irate “Rabbi Manny Shevitz” in the low-budget 1999 comedy film “My X-Girlfriend’s Wedding Reception.”
Written and directed by Martin Guigui, the film stars Debbie Gibson, Kelly Bishop, and features Vitamin C, the pop singer whose 1999 hit “Graduation (Friends Forever)“ dominated charts in the early 2000s.
The film’s synopsis on Rotten Tomatoes says it involves an unfaithful groom, a former lover of the bride playing in a band, and a drunk maid-of-honor.
In his iconic Brooklyn accent, Sanders rants about the state of baseball, saying “the worst thing to ever have happened” was when the the Brooklyn Dodgers moved to Los Angeles. One of the top YouTube comments says: “The funniest part is that he isn’t acting, he’s just being himself.”
Most of the characters have jocose names; such as “Father O'Rdeal,” the priest played by late Dom DeLuise, and “Max Tune,” the wedding band’s keyboardist played by Guigui himself.
The film is rated 5.6/10 on IMDb, based on 122 reviews, and 67 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 90 ratings.
