His opponents have described him as a communist or even a Soviet sympathizer, while others say he’s not a socialist at all. Noam Chomsky—the American linguist, philosopher, and cognitive scientist—has described Sanders as a “New Deal” Democrat in the vein of former President Franklin Roosevelt and not a socialist.

In 2006, Sanders defined what he meant by the term.

He said, “I think it means the government has got to play a very important role in making sure that as a right of citizenship, all of our people have health care; that as a right, all of our kids, regardless of income, have quality child care, are able to go to college without going deeply into debt; that it means we do not allow large corporations and moneyed interests to destroy our environment; that we create a government in which it is not dominated by big money interest. I mean, to me, it means democracy, frankly,” according to The Hill.

Despite shocking the political class with an upset win in Michigan, Sanders still trails behind Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary, and on Tuesday, Clinton still won more delegates than Sanders.  However, some analysts say that Sanders’s victory in Michigan is significant, and it might extend the Democratic presidential race for weeks. His victory in Michigan netted Sanders seven more delegates than Clinton. According to the Washington Post, Clinton has 1,221 delegates, while Sanders has 571.
