Baidu Knows recently published a survey of the top 10 fears of the Chinese people. It found that men are most afraid of poverty and women are most afraid of getting old. The greatest terror about appearance also varies by gender. Men tremble at the thought of baldness, and women quake at the horror of wrinkles.

Fear Rankings

According to the Yangtse Evening Post, 2.9 million men answered that they were most afraid of being poor, and 2.7 million women said they were most scared of getting old. Aging was not on the top fears list for men, while women did not name money or lack of money as a top fear.

Men said they worried about career problems. They were afraid of picking the wrong side in an acute conflict between supervisors, and of being compared to others.

Women in general said they worried about love affairs. They said they were afraid of their partners cheating on them, and lacked a sense of security.

Both genders worried about their own appearance; men dreaded beer bellies and women dreaded sagging breasts.

Women Fear Marriage

The survey measured fears about relationships and marriage.

It found 8 percent more men than women feared being single.

There was a surprising gender divide: 70 percent of women were scared of getting married, and only 30 percent of men were. Married or not, men and women were both afraid of a partner’s change of heart.
