Tony Scott, who directed a string of hit movies including “Top Gun,” died after jumping off a bridge, it was confirmed on Monday.

Scott, 68, who had battled inoperable brain cancer, jumped from the Vincent Thomas Bridge in Los Angeles, police told ABC News.

Authorities are investigating the death as a suicide.

The British-born director rose to fame after directing the 1986 film “Top Gun,” starring Tom Cruise, which grossed more than $300 million around the world. He also directed “Crimson Tide,” “Man on Fire,” “Deja Vu,” and “True Romance,” which was written by director Quentin Tarantino.

Scott was described by Cruise, who issued a statement to The Wrap website, as “a creative visionary whose mark on film is immeasurable.”
