Sophia Loren, the Italian-born Academy Award-winning actress, turned 76 on Monday and is slated to receive a prestigious Japanese award next month.
Along with sculptor Rebecca Horn, artist Maurizio Pollini, Loren and two others are set to receive the 2010 Praemium Imperiale awards, according to the New York Times, who sourced the Japan Art Association.
The Japanese prize covers areas that the Nobel Peace Prize does not.
Japanese architect Toyo Ito and Italian painter Enrico Castellani are also due to receive the award.
The prizes carry with them a cash sum of $169,000 a piece.
As evidenced, Loren achieved a highly successful career as an actress. The American Film Institute on AFI’s 100 Years... 100 Stars named her as one of the top 25 screen actresses of all time.
She won an Oscar for Best Actress in the 1960 Italian film Two Women, making her the first foreign language-speaking person to win a best acting award.
